A Beginner's Guide to Assistive Technology Through the NDIS

Assistive Technology4 March 20267 min read

Assistive technology (AT) is any device, equipment, or system that helps a person with a disability to do things more independently. Through the NDIS, many Australians can access the assistive technology they need — but the process can feel overwhelming. This guide breaks it down.

What Counts as Assistive Technology?

AT covers an enormous range of equipment, from simple to complex:

  • Low-cost ATJar openers, long-handled reachers, non-slip mats, large-button phones, medication reminders
  • Mid-cost ATShower chairs, wheeled walkers, standing frames, adapted utensils, pressure cushions
  • High-cost ATManual and powered wheelchairs, specialised seating systems, ceiling hoists, vehicle modifications
  • Electronic ATCommunication devices, environmental control systems, eye-gaze technology, smart home adaptations
  • How Is AT Funded Through the NDIS?

Assistive technology funding depends on the cost and complexity:

  • **Low-cost, low-risk AT** (under ~$1,500) — Can often be purchased directly from your Core Supports budget without a detailed assessment.
  • **Mid-cost AT** ($1,500-$15,000) — Usually requires an OT assessment and report with clinical justification.
  • **High-cost, complex AT** (over $15,000) — Requires a comprehensive OT assessment, detailed quoting, and NDIA approval. Often involves equipment trials.
  • The Assessment Process

For anything beyond basic low-cost items, your occupational therapist will:

  • 1.Assess your functional needs in your own environment
  • 2.Research and recommend appropriate equipment options
  • 3.Arrange trials so you can test equipment before committing
  • 4.Prepare a detailed report with clinical justification for the NDIA
  • 5.Coordinate with suppliers for quoting and delivery
  • 6.Provide training once equipment arrives
  • Why Trials Matter

A wheelchair or seating system might look perfect on paper but not suit your body, your home, or your lifestyle. Trials let you test equipment in your real environment before any final decisions. At Every Body Rehab, we always arrange trials for significant AT — it's essential for getting the right outcome.

Getting the Right AT for You

The key to good assistive technology is a thorough assessment by an experienced occupational therapist who takes the time to understand your life — not just your diagnosis. The best AT is the equipment you actually use every day, not the most expensive option.
