If you're navigating the NDIS, you've likely come across the term 'Functional Capacity Assessment' — or FCA. But what exactly is it, and how does it help? In this article, we break down everything you need to know.
What Is a Functional Capacity Assessment?
A Functional Capacity Assessment is a comprehensive evaluation conducted by an occupational therapist. It looks at how a disability or health condition affects your ability to perform everyday tasks — things like self-care, mobility, communication, housework, and community participation.
The assessment is conducted in your own environment (at home, school, or in the community) so your OT can see the real challenges you face in the settings where you actually live and function.
When Do You Need an FCA?
FCAs are commonly needed in several situations:
What Happens During the Assessment?
Your occupational therapist will spend 2-3 hours with you, observing and assessing your function across key areas. This typically includes:
The assessment combines standardised tools with real-world observation to paint an accurate picture of your functional capacity.
The Report
After the assessment, your OT prepares a detailed clinical report. This includes functional impact statements — clear descriptions of how your disability affects each area of daily life — along with goal recommendations aligned with the NDIS framework.
A well-written FCA report is often the difference between a successful and unsuccessful NDIS application or plan review.
